The terms Religion and Spirituality are often used interchangeably by people, however, that could not be further from the truth, as the two are referring to fundamentally different approaches to connecting with a higher power or God. In this article, we will look at the four key differences between religion and spirituality in their current form.
Organizational Structure
The first and perhaps most important difference between the two comes from the very definition of what a religion is, as religion refers to an organized institution that has a set of structures and practices that are usually imposed on the believers. This more organized structure is completely different to spirituality which refers to an individual practice to reach a connection with a higher power or God. While both religion and spirituality have the connotation of being associated with a belief system one is completely structured and organized while the other one is not.
Leadership
Due to the organizational structure of religion, the beliefs of a religious group are often not only group beliefs but also guided by one leader. By contrast, those who are just interested in spirituality will usually find that their beliefs are solitary, and while they can occasionally meet mentors or people to discuss their faith with, it is not a uniting factor between them and other people.
Correct Story
One of the principal aspects of religion is trying to convince others that your religion is the correct one. However, spirituality is much more fluid as people are allowed to select the things that they believe to be true. These beliefs can have their origins in various different religions, therefore eliminating the need to find the one true story or religion.
The Search for Truth
In a church, the search for truth will often mean belonging to some clergy or organization and climbing through the ranks. However, when it comes to spirituality the pursuit of truth has no rules, and people are able to continue searching for the truth based on the beliefs they found out and their personal feelings.
