Investing in ability/vision vs Just leading
There is a lot of talk about what it means to lead, however, what many people fail to understand is that there is a fundamental difference between investing in ability and vision and just simply leading. The two might be connected at their core, but in reality, switching from simply leading to investing in ability and vision is going to change how you handle others in your organization and vicinity.
While just leading is focused predominantly on a top-down approach that seeks immediate results by having a leader directly push their employees to comply with their requests, investing in ability is calling for a more open collaborative effort. For a leader to move towards this approach they will need to spend time identifying the talent and skills of those in their organization. Once identified the focus should be on empowering employees and others in their circle while also further nurturing their talent.
Another really big difference between the two is that while just leading is looking at a more direct and short-term approach, investing in a vision, the leadership approach becomes much clearer as it needs to be communicated in a way that helps inspire others in the organization, rather than having it being enforced on them.
The culture that needs to be fostered in an organization that has a visionary leader is much more engaged as the entire workforce will need to be focused on working collaboratively to have a positive work environment where the impact of their work is recognized. Employees are also much more loyal to these types of organizations as their experience is valued and the organization is investing in ensuring that their skill set continues to grow.
