Inner Conflicts

Inner conflicts refer to battles within one’s self and are often related to battles of values, principles, emotions, ideas, and even desires. One of the most common types of conflict is known as moral dilemmas which bring people in a hard position of having to make a choice that potentially might not be in alignment with their own beliefs

Moral conflicts in particular are often related to people acting in a way that is morally correct rather than in a way that would benefit their self-interests. These moral dilemmas are particularly hard for people as they will lead to them compromising their values in favor of potentially receiving immediate gratification or some temporary benefit.

Another very common type of inner battle is the battle between logic and emotion. This is particularly common when your mind can think of what the logical solution to a certain problem or situation will be, but your emotions are pulling you in a direction away from the one that you logically believe you should follow. Expressions such as ‘follow your heart’ have come from precisely these types of situations where people are called to decide between their thoughts and feelings.

It is also common for people to struggle between expressing themselves in the way that they find most authentic to themselves or conforming to the way society wants them to act. Choosing to move away from societal standards can be a tough choice which will often be accompanied by a big internal conflict.
